Annual Report 2019
Vallecas Project Volunteer’s Day
The Queen Sofia Foundation and the CIEN (Neurological Diseases Research Center) Foundation, with the collaboration of the RTVE Orchestra and Choir, held on June 1 the seventh edition of the Vallecas Project Volunteer’s Day. The Monu- mental Theater of Madrid hosted this tribute, in which the piece Carmina Burana, by the German composer Carl Orff, was performed by the public television Choir and Orchestra, and continued with the participation of the magician Andrés Mad- ruga.
The journalist Irma Soriano presented the event, which was attended by the volun- teers who make the Vallecas Project possible. José Luis Nogueira, secretary of the Queen Sofia Foundation, and Ma Ángeles Pérez, manager of the CIEN Foundation, welcomed the attendees and thanked the volunteers for their selfless contribution in favor of scientific research. José Luis Nogueira highlighted the “valuable contri- bution to science made by the project volunteers” and how “this type of action, which is social and scientific at the same time, makes it possible to progressively advance towards a solution for the disease.” Along the same lines, the CIEN Foun- dation manager wanted to emphasize the importance of Alzheimer’s research, which “would not be possible without the generosity of the volunteers who partic- ipate in this type of initiatives. The time they dedicate to us is invaluable, because it is time earned for science and research”.
The journalist Irma Soriano, in charge of leading the event, stressed the impor- tance of the contribution and selfless commitment of the volunteers, as well as the effort that both Foundations dedicate to the initiative: “we are proud of this collaboration between scientists and volunteers and of projects like this, which combine science and conscience”. After the initial performance of the magician Andrés Madruga, the RTVE Orchestra and Choir performed the piece Carmina Bu- rana, composed by Orff between 1935 and 1936, and which uses as its text some of the medieval poems in Middle German, Latin and Old Provençal. It is a work of great musical color that praises vital enjoyment and happiness as a basic value.
